Fifth Avenue looking south from 60th Street shows the stretch where the avenue runs along the eastern edge of Central Park, then becoming one of the city's most fashionable shopping and residential corridors. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country and sold their views as prints and postcards, recorded the scene on a glass dry plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. The street would have been busy with horse-drawn carriages, streetcars, and pedestrians, reflecting a city growing quickly around its famous park.
