The sign for the 19th Ward Bank sets this view apart from the many street scenes in the collection, and it places the picture in one of Manhattan's local political districts, where neighborhood banks served residents and small businesses. The Detroit Publishing Company made the photograph, and the firm was known for its wide catalog of American cities and landscapes, sold to a broad public in the early 1900s. The record dates it only to between 1905 and 1915, a period when horse-drawn wagons still shared city streets with the first automobiles. Look closely at the street for clues about how commerce and everyday life looked before the First World War.
