A large American flag hangs in this inspection room at Ellis Island, the immigration station in New York Harbor, which sets the official tone of the space. Ellis Island processed millions of arrivals after it opened in 1892, and the main building that replaced the original wooden structure was completed in 1900. Here, inspectors reviewed the paperwork and health of newcomers, and those who needed closer examination could be held for further review. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this large glass negative between 1900 and 1915, documented American cities, landscapes and institutions for commercial sale, so the view also records the building's interior at the height of its use.
