The College of the City of New York, a tuition-free public college founded in 1847 as the Free Academy, is the subject of this glass negative. The institution took its later name in 1907, when it was consolidating onto its new hilltop campus in Harlem, which is the period this view likely records. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its tinted views of American cities and landscapes, produced many such images for sale as souvenirs and postcards. The campus scene offers a useful glimpse of how the city's public college presented itself to visitors in the early twentieth century.
