In this view, the suburban home of Mrs. Robert Hoe, Jr., stands in Port Washington on Long Island's North Shore. Around 1900, that stretch of coast drew well-to-do New York families who built country houses there, and the Hoe name was tied to R. Hoe & Company, the firm that made large printing presses. The glass negative, measuring 8 by 10 inches, came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many views of towns, resorts and estates across the country. Its straightforward exterior shot preserves the architecture and grounds of an early twentieth-century family seat.
