The flag reading "Times" marks this as the newspaper's headquarters at the tower on Longacre Square, which the New York Times occupied in 1904 and which gave the intersection its new name, Times Square. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its color and black-and-white views of American cities and landscapes, photographed it around 1908 on a 5 by 3.5 inch glass plate. The picture captures the tower in the years when Times Square was emerging as a center of theaters, streetcars, and electric signage, and it is worth noticing how the newspaper's name on the flag announced the building's role in the neighborhood.
