From a rooftop vantage point, this stereograph frames the upper stories of the Hotel Cadillac beside the New York Times Building, two landmarks of the Times Square district as it was taking shape. The newspaper had moved into its new tower in 1904, the same year Longacre Square was renamed for the paper. Underwood and Underwood, the firm credited with the image, sold large numbers of stereoviews for home viewers, so scenes like this one gave armchair travelers a three-dimensional look at the growing city.
