Few buildings in New York were more closely tied to the city's public life than the home of *The New York Times*, shown here in a wood engraving. The paper occupied a building on Park Row, the newspaper row near City Hall, for decades, and its headquarters there drew crowds for election returns and breaking news. Wood engravings like this one were a standard way for illustrated papers and magazines to reproduce architecture and street scenes before halftone photography became common in the 1890s. The record does not give a date, but the engraved view itself is a useful record of the downtown newspaper district.
