Few buildings on the Manhattan waterfront were as unusual as the Starrett-Lehigh Building, a freight terminal on the West Side built in the early 1930s for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Its interior ramps let trucks drive up to the upper floors, so goods could move between rail cars, trucks and storage without relying on conventional freight elevators. The title suggests the Empire State Building appears in the right background, though that detail is unconfirmed. The photograph is credited to Irving Underhill, whose views of New York were part of the city's documentation of its rapidly changing skyline in these years.
