From the observation decks of the Empire State Building, this night view looks down on the grid of Manhattan streets and the lit windows of the surrounding towers. The building opened in 1931 and remained the tallest in the world until the early 1970s, so images like this one showed a city from a height few visitors could otherwise reach. The record credits the copyright to Vincent Lopez and dates the print to February 5, 1937, placing it in the winter of that year, about six years after the tower opened.
