The Empire State Express was the New York Central's named train between New York City and Buffalo, and this 1941 color poster promotes it as a new and modern service. It dates from a period when railroads were competing hard for passengers against automobiles and airliners. Posters like this one hung in stations and ticket offices, where bold color and simplified forms were meant to sell the journey as much as the train itself.
