Few stretches of Manhattan glowed as brightly after dark as the corner where Broadway meets Herald Square, and this stereograph shows the Herald Square theater with its signs and street lamps lit. The theater opened in 1895 near West 35th Street and took its name from the square, which was named for the nearby *New York Herald* building. The scene reflects the electric lighting that later gave this part of Broadway its nickname, the Great White Way, as the theater district turned night into a spectacle. Made by Underwood & Underwood, the card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the lit street a sense of depth.
