Lower Broadway, the stretch of Manhattan's main avenue that runs through the financial district, is the setting here, and the title's "canyon" comparison fits the view of office towers closing in over the street. William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer who published large numbers of stereoscopic views, made this card around 1904. Its two slightly offset images were meant to be seen together in a stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth and made the crowded city feel close at hand. Cards like this sold as parlor entertainment and as a window onto the modern American city.
