Broadway at 38th Street, in the heart of Midtown, is the spot that sets this view apart from other street scenes on the board. Its crowded commercial frontage would have been disrupted by open trenches, as cut-and-cover excavation required tearing up the roadway and working alongside shops and traffic. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photographer who recorded city life in New York in the early twentieth century. It shows how the subway, which opened in 1904, was still reshaping the streets above it well after its first trains ran.
