Curb brokers crowd a Wall Street block in this photograph from October 2, 1920, when the curb market was an open-air trading floor in the street outside the New York Stock Exchange. Brokers shouted orders and signaled one another amid the traffic and onlookers, and the crowds in the picture show how busy the district was. The image is a Bain News Service print from the George Grantham Bain Collection. It was taken only about two weeks after a bomb exploded on Wall Street on September 16, 1920, which killed dozens of people and left the area under heavy attention.
