The view centers on the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center at Broadway and 168th Street, a complex that took shape in Washington Heights as the medical school and New York Presbyterian Hospital moved uptown from their older downtown sites in the late 1920s. The campus was planned as a single institution, with its major buildings grouped around a central court and designed in a Gothic-influenced style meant to suggest permanence. Irving Underhill, the photographer and copyright holder named on this print, made many views of the city's architecture and street life in this period, and the picture records a newly built medical landmark at an early stage of its life.
