The Astor theater stood on Broadway in the Times Square area, a stretch that filled with playhouses in the first decade of the 1900s as the district became the center of New York's commercial theater. This interior view, dated about 1906, shows the auditorium at about the time the house opened. The Astor name points to the Astor family, whose real estate holdings shaped much of midtown Manhattan. Photographs of theater interiors from these years are valuable because they record decorative plasterwork, seating, and lighting that were often lost when houses were remodeled or torn down.
