Few movie palaces of the 1920s matched the Roxy, which opened on Seventh Avenue at 50th Street in March 1927 and seated several thousand people. Its builder, Samuel L. "Roxy" Rothafel, was a showman who paired feature films with live stage acts and a large orchestra, so the auditorium was designed for spectacle as much as for screening. The sweeping balcony visible here shows the scale that earned the house its nickname, the "Cathedral of the Motion Picture." The theater was demolished in 1960, which makes interior views like this one a valuable record of how audiences once experienced the movies.
