The main corridor of the New theater, pictured here around 1909, belongs to a building on Central Park West that was designed to set a new standard for serious theater in New York. The house opened in 1909 with financial backing from wealthy patrons who wanted a permanent company performing classical and repertory drama in place of the touring productions that dominated the city. Its lavish public spaces were meant to match that ambition, and this passageway shows the architecture and decoration that were part of the venture. The theater later took the name Century theater, which is how the building is indexed here.
