Few theaters of the period were built with the ambition of the New theater, which stood on Central Park West at the edge of the park when this exterior was photographed in October 1909. Its architects, Carrère & Hastings, were among the most prominent firms of the Beaux-Arts era, and the building's formal classical front reflects that training. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a pioneering photographer of American architecture, recorded the facade for the theater, whose owners copyrighted the image. The house was renamed the Century theater within a few years, and the picture now serves as a record of a building that was defined as much by its architecture as by its productions.
