The building in this photograph was the New theater, a house built on Central Park West near 62nd Street and opened in 1909 with the goal of presenting serious drama and opera for well-to-do audiences rather than the usual commercial fare. Its backers were a group of wealthy patrons, and the grand, classically inspired façade reflected the ambitions of the era's cultural boosters. The venture struggled financially and the theater was soon turned to other uses, later being known as the Century theater, a name that appears in the subject headings for this image. The photograph is a useful record of how Manhattan's theater district was spreading uptown in the early 1900s.
