This corner view shows the Trans-Lux Theater at the intersection of 58th Street and Madison Avenue, photographed on April 8, 1931. The Trans-Lux company was known for its illuminated screens that displayed news and information, and its Manhattan houses were built around short news and newsreel programs, a format that suited busy midtown streets. The photograph was copyrighted by the Trans-Lux Movies Corporation, which makes it a useful record of how a newsreel theater presented itself to the street during the early Depression years. Details of the record, including the date, come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
