A carved lintel bearing the words "The New York World" is the focus of this 1954 close-up, which shows the stone above a building entrance rather than the street scene around it. The name points to Joseph Pulitzer's newspaper, which was based in lower Manhattan's Park Row for decades and was known for its powerful, crusading journalism. The World merged into the New York World-Telegram in 1931, so by the mid-1950s the inscription survived as a reminder of an older newspaper era. The photograph comes from the New York World-Telegram and the Sun newspaper collection, a set of press images used by reporters and editors.
