Rather than showing a street scene, this picture copies an architectural drawing of the Camerden and Forster Building, a commercial structure in New York. The image was made as a large 11 by 14 inch glass negative, a format favored for detailed reproduction work in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced it, was known for its broad survey of American towns, landmarks, and commercial life, and its negatives document how businesses presented their buildings to the public. Because the source is a drawing, the picture records the building as planned or rendered, which makes it useful for comparing design intentions with the structures that were actually built.
