The Singer Tower rose at Broadway and Liberty Street in Lower Manhattan, and it was the tallest building in the world when it was completed around 1908. Designed by architect Ernest Flagg for the Singer Sewing Machine Company, it stood about 612 feet high, a title it held only until the Metropolitan Life Tower surpassed it the following year. This photoprint by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer, captures the tower in its early years, when its slender profile still looked remarkable against the surrounding lower-Manhattan streets.
