This watercolor rendering shows a city hall proposed for New York in 1802, a design that was drawn but never built. It appears on page 3 of an album that belongs to the papers of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the English-born architect who would later help shape the United States Capitol. The drawing reflects the early 1800s, when New York was growing quickly and needed a larger seat for its municipal government. The city ultimately built its own City Hall on Park Row, which was completed in 1812, so this design offers a glimpse of one of the alternatives considered during that period.
