Queensbridge Houses, in the Long Island City section of Queens, is the particular setting here, and the record names this building as "5-2," one of the blocks in the complex. The New York City Housing Authority built the development with aid from the United States Housing Authority under the federal housing legislation of the late 1930s. It was among the first public housing projects in the country and, for a time, one of the largest, meant to replace crowded tenements with low-rent apartments set among open courtyards. The print, dated around 1942, documents the new housing model during the years when the government was expanding public housing in the city.
