This view looks north across Union Park, the private, gated enclosure at the upper end of Broadway, from the point where the avenue begins to narrow toward the city's northern edge. The record dates the print to around October 3, 1849, and associates it with Sarony & Major, a New York lithography firm that produced many city views for popular sale in the 1840s. Such views were prized by residents who were watching Manhattan's streets and fashionable blocks expand northward, and they show how a park that was once on the outskirts had become a showcase for the city's elegant residences.
