A lithograph of the Washington Hotel on Broadway in New York, dated to July 1833, presents a single building on the city's main commercial street. The print was drawn from nature by M. Sweett and lithographed by the firm of Endicott & Sweett, with James Ward credited on the plate, and it was entered for copyright that summer. Lithography had reached the United States only a few years earlier, and prints like this one often served as both a record of a building and an advertisement for it. Its date places it in a New York that was growing quickly, which makes the view useful to anyone studying the city's early nineteenth-century streetscape.
