Washington's entry into New York on November 25, 1783, marked the British evacuation of the city and the end of seven years of occupation, a moment that still draws attention in histories of the Revolution. This chromolithograph reproduces an original drawing by Alphonse Bigot, a French-born artist, and the color version was printed by Thomas Sinclair of Philadelphia, probably the Sinclair born around 1832. The scene centers on the general riding through a crowd of onlookers, who fill the streets and windows to greet the army. Its date of 1860 reflects the nineteenth-century taste for historical scenes of the Revolution, which were widely reproduced for American homes.
