The setting is Yokohama, spelled "Yokuhama" in the original caption, where Commodore Matthew C. Perry's officers presented American gifts to Japanese officials during the expedition's second visit in 1854. The gifts, which included a model steam locomotive and telegraph equipment, were meant to impress a country that had kept most foreigners at arm's length for more than two centuries, and they accompanied the diplomacy that produced the Treaty of Kanagawa that spring. Sarony & Co. of New York made this tinted lithograph for Francis L. Hawks's official account of the voyage, published in Washington in 1856.
