Shuri, the royal capital of the Ryukyu Islands, is the setting for this plate, which shows Commodore Matthew C. Perry's visit during his expedition to East Asia. Perry's squadron called at the islands in 1853 and 1854 on its way to Japan, and the Ryukyuan court received the Americans with formal ceremony. The drawing was made by the German-born artist W. Heine, who accompanied the expedition, and the lithograph was printed by Sarony & Co. of New York. It was published in Francis L. Hawks' 1856 narrative of the voyage, which presented the expedition to an American readership.
