Shown here is a winter camp scene dated January 28, drawn by J.C. Tidball and printed as a color lithograph by Sarony, Major & Knapp of New York. It illustrates the government's Pacific Railroad surveys along the 47th and 49th parallels, as reported in House Executive Document 129 of the 33rd Congress. In the mid-1850s, Congress sponsored these expeditions to find and map possible routes for a transcontinental railroad, and the reports paired scientific observations with images of the crews at work. Pictures like this one, which show a bivouac in cold weather, give a sense of the daily hardships of surveying unsettled country.
