Major Jack Downing, the homespun Yankee narrator whose letters satirized Andrew Jackson's administration, is the subject of this lithograph, made from a painting by Joseph T. Harris. The character was the invention of Maine newspaperman Seba Smith, who began publishing the Downing letters in 1833, and his shrewd, deadpan commentary made the figure one of the most widely read political personas of the Jacksonian era. Endicott & Sons of New York produced the print, and Harris deposited the impression for copyright on December 2, 1833.
