Plate 36 of the Architectural Iron Works' 1865 *Illustrations of Iron Architecture* shows three storefront designs, numbered 42, 46, and 48, in color lithograph. Cast iron let builders hang slender columns, deep cornices, and wide plate-glass windows on a masonry building, and the firm offered such fronts from catalog patterns. Lithographs like this one, printed by the New York firm Sarony, Major & Knapp, helped make these fronts a familiar feature of the city's commercial streets in the 1860s.
