This bird's-eye view shows Springfield, Massachusetts, a Connecticut River town, as if seen from a high vantage point in 1850. Panoramic views like this were a popular way for mid-century American towns to present themselves, with streets, churches, and businesses drawn in close detail. D.W. Moody drew the design on stone, and Sarony & Major, a New York firm that printed many city views of the period, produced the lithograph, which was later tinted by hand. Springfield's armory and growing manufacturing base made it an important industrial center at the time.
