A busy lunch room in New York's downtown district is the subject here, as Harper's Weekly presented it in its September 8, 1888 issue. Men crowd around counters and tables to grab a midday meal between errands and office work. The drawing is by Thure de Thulstrup, a Swedish-born illustrator who contributed often to Harper's, and it ran as a wood engraving across two pages of the magazine. Quick, inexpensive lunch rooms like this one served the city's clerks and business workers, and the scene offers a useful glimpse of how working New Yorkers ate and socialized in the late 1880s.
