The reception room of the Clarence H. White School of Photography in New York City is the subject of this small platinum print, made around 1924. Clarence White founded the school in 1914 to teach photography as an art, and its teachers and students were central to the Pictorialist movement, which valued soft focus, rich tonal range and hand-worked printing. Platinum paper, prized for its subtle gray tones and long tonal scale, was a favored process of the 1920s. The image offers a rare glimpse of the everyday setting where students and instructors met during the school's active years.
