Few pictures in this gallery show the working side of photography as directly as this view of the printing room at the Clarence H. White School of Photography, at 460 West 144th Street in New York. White, a leading pictorialist, founded the school in 1914 to teach students to make expressive images by hand, and platinum printing, a slow process that depended on careful coating and exposure, was central to that training. The print is signed by Frances Bode, who was affiliated with the school, and dated 1922, a year when the school's pictorialist approach was still shaping its work.
