Students at a Marconi wireless school in New York practice sending and receiving messages in this c1912 Underwood & Underwood photograph. The Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America trained operators for ship and shore stations, and its schools prepared young men to listen for and tap out Morse code by ear. Demand for trained operators rose sharply after the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912, and the Radio Act later that year required ships to carry qualified operators, which made such training more urgent.
