Schoolchildren gathered at Public School No. 4, at 173rd Street and Fulton Avenue, to plant trees on Arbor Day. The holiday began in Nebraska in 1872, when J. Sterling Morton proposed a day devoted to planting, and schools across the country took it up in the following decades. By the early twentieth century, many city districts used the observance to teach students to care for public grounds, tending young trees in school yards and nearby streets. The image is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, and its title comes from information supplied by the Bain News Service that was not independently verified.
