Few spring traditions at Barnard College were as visible as Tree Day, and this glass negative captures the academic procession of May 1908, when the Class of 1911 took part. Barnard, the women's college affiliated with Columbia University, had moved to its Morningside Heights campus only a few years earlier, so the scene reflects an institution still building its rituals. The photograph came from the Bain News Service, a commercial agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers, and its title is recorded as unverified, so the particulars of the event are worth checking against other sources.
