Schoolchildren planting trees in a New York City public school yard make this one of the more hopeful scenes in the Bain News Service files. The record dates it to May 8, 1908, a time when Arbor Day, first observed in Nebraska in 1872 at the urging of J. Sterling Morton, had become a fixture in American classrooms. Bain's staff recorded city news on glass plates like this one, and the picture shows how schools tried to bring greenery and civic lessons into crowded urban neighborhoods. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact school and location remain unconfirmed.
