A student identified as Leon Berman, the class orator, is the focus of this 1908 record of an Arbor Day observance in New York City's public schools. Arbor Day, founded in Nebraska by J. Sterling Morton in 1872, had spread into school calendars across the country by the early twentieth century, when pupils were often asked to plant trees and deliver speeches on forestry and civic care. The image was made by the Bain News Service, a press photography agency whose glass negatives record New York street life and public events of the period. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the spelling of the name and the exact occasion should be read with that in mind.
