The particular feature here is the pairing of a railroad image with three winged figures labeled Faith, Hope, and Charity. The title "Inebriate's Express" uses the vocabulary of the railroads, which were then the newest and most powerful form of transport, to frame drinking as a journey toward ruin. The virtues above it offer the counterpoint: a route away from that destination. Color lithographs like this one circulated widely in the 1870s, when temperance societies and reform writers used popular prints to make moral arguments to ordinary households. The New York firm that printed it was one of several commercial houses producing such work for the American market.
