Treat 'em rough" urges men aged 18 to 45 to join the tanks, and the record lists cats among its subjects, a striking choice for a recruiting poster. The United States Tank Corps was newly organized in 1917, after Britain and France had first used tanks in combat in 1916, and American recruiters were working to fill its ranks. The lithograph was printed by the National Printing & Engraving Company, which had offices in Chicago, New York and St. Louis. The record also names the United States Fuel Administration as a sponsor, a sign of how wartime agencies shared promotional work.
