Views of Union army musicians are less common than portraits of men in line, which gives this picture of the drum corps of the 93rd New York Infantry at Bealeton, Virginia, a distinct place in the record. Drummers relayed orders and beat the calls that structured camp and march, and many were teenagers. Bealeton, a railroad stop in Fauquier County, served as a Union camp in 1863 along the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat and expose each plate quickly in the field.
