Few camp scenes show the daily life of enlisted men as directly as this one, which records the noncommissioned officers of Company D, 93rd New York Infantry, gathered for a meal at their mess in Bealeton, Virginia. Union troops of the Army of the Potomac spent much of 1863 encamped in and around Fauquier County, resting and reorganizing between campaigns along the Rappahannock. The picture survives as a wet collodion glass negative, and its stereo format was meant to give viewers a sense of depth when seen through a special viewer. Sergeants and corporals ran the daily affairs of each company, yet they appear far less often in wartime photographs than officers or battle scenes.
