Company I of the 93rd New York Infantry, posed as officers and noncommissioned officers at Bealton, Virginia, in August 1863, is the subject of this glass negative. Bealton was a camp along the Orange and Alexandria Railroad in Fauquier County, where Union troops rested and regrouped in the weeks after the Gettysburg campaign. The image uses wet collodion, the standard process of the period, and its sleeve caption fixes the date and place. Earlier cataloging linked it to Alexander Gardner, whose studio documented the Army of the Potomac, but that attribution has since been revised.
