Bealton, a small station on the railroad in Fauquier County, Virginia, is the setting for this picture of Company K of the 93rd New York Infantry, the men assigned to guard army headquarters. The negative was made in August 1863, when the Army of the Potomac was camped in the region after the Gettysburg campaign, and it was exposed as a wet collodion glass plate, a process that required photographers to work quickly with chemicals on site. The plate was once credited to Alexander Gardner, the well-known Civil War photographer, though that attribution is now uncertain. The image offers a close look at a headquarters escort unit in the field.
